The Philosophy of our Centre
· Each child is a unique individual with their own pattern of development, abilities and interests
· All children have the right to experience quality education & care
· Learning is a lifelong process for children, families and staff.
· All families should be treated equally and each child’s social & cultural background will be acknowledged and
respected
· Children need the freedom to actively satisfy their curiosity and to make some decisions within an environment that is guided by caring professionals
· Children learn through their play in an environment where they are able to explore, show initiative and problem
solve
· Children need to feel safe, secure and loved in an environment where they feel “at home”
· We are interested in sustainability and promote care for our environment in a variety of ways. Education for
sustainability can begin in early childhood education with gardening, recycling, water conservation and wildlife friendly habitats as part of the program
· Healthy eating is promoted as well as caring for our health generally. Outdoor play is necessary for development and children have a large part of the day where they can choose to be indoors or outdoors
· Families need to feel included and welcome with their involvement encouraged, as well as links with the wider community
· Children are encouraged to respect & co-operate with others in an environment that focuses on positive outcomes, building self- confidence and self–esteem
· We implement the “Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline” alongside the National curriculum “Early Years Learning Framework”
· Our program reflects the practices, principles and learning outcomes of these documents through a variety of activities and experiences
· Learning experiences should be a balance between child initiated experiences and adult/teacher initiated activities
· Children learn best when they are involved and unhurried
· We have respect and value the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture and we acknowledge their connections to place, language and history. We have included a bush tucker garden in our backyard as well as native bees and a nesting box
The staff are all active participants in the wider Early Childhood Sector, who enjoy participating in professional development. We welcome students on work experience, from local High Schools, TAFE and University to become part of our “family” at Brookes Street.
